Welcome to the WebTech University Paint Shop Pro 101 Class using PSP 7. This course is designed for the beginner in mind. You will have two weeks to finish the course (piece of cake).

Our goal is to make PSP as easy as possible to learn and understand, and to give you a flying start working with, and making your own graphics. It is preferred that you have sufficient knowledge of HTML as well to be able to post your homework graphics on a web site, however this is not a requirement. Your assigned instructor is available to help you every step of the way. Just email your instructor with any of your PSP questions as you go through the lessons.

Before we start, I want to mention one of the great features of Paint Shop Pro. If you make a mistake, all you have to do to erase one or several mistakes is go to "Edit" and select the Undo option or select the Undo button. This will help more than you can imagine as you work with Paint Shop Pro.

In PSP 101 we will not be covering every tool and option available in Paint Shop Pro. You may also notice that the buttons are not discussed in the order of appearance on the palettes. The buttons are grouped together because they function or act in much the same way. Don't worry if you don't understand all the buttons at first! You can refer back as we put them into use later in the course.

Also in these lessons you will be displaying images for your homework. Please make your images small enough for your page to load fast. Large images take way too long to load. As we discuss the buttons on the following pages, please learn to use them as you go along! Ok, let's get started!!

Bring up your Paint Shop Pro with an image on the screen, along with your browser. You will need to refer to your PSP tools as you go through the lessons. The reason you need an image up is so the buttons will be active on your PSP screen. Just go to File, Open, and choose an image from your hard drive.

WAIT! Before we go any further some of the effects will not be available if you have a gif image (256 colors) that you are working on. Most effects need 16 million colors to work, so from the Colors menu, slide your mouse right down to Increase Color Depth - 16 Million Colors (24 bit). Now everything will be available.

The Arrow tool

button

When you left click and hold the mouse button down on an image using the arrow tool, it changes into a little hand. The hand is used to drag (or move) the picture around in the viewable window to any position desired when the picture is enlarged (zoomed in). This is very handy when working with an image to do fine detail work in a particular area of the image. This dragging option will not work unless you have zoomed your graphic one step larger or more.

The Zoom tool

button

The zoom tool works just like the name suggests. It zooms in to make the graphic bigger, or zooms out to make the graphic smaller. So let's give it a try! Click on the zoom tool, and then left click on your image. Each time you click your left mouse button on the image your image gets bigger and bigger. To reduce the size of your graphic, (zoom out) click on the right mouse button.

Go ahead and left click with the zoom tool on your image 4 times. You should have a very large graphic on your screen. Now click on the arrow tool and go back to the graphic and hold down a left click. A little hand should appear. With the hand, drag the graphic around the window. Now you can work on an enlarged area of the graphic. This allows you to work with a larger view of an image area to be able to do that fine detail work.
